Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Bldg. 1 exterior

Since its foundation in 1977, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has sought to provide higher education that embodies “integration of humanities and sciences” and “comprehensive and interdisciplinary perspectives;” this effort to surpass traditional boundaries between academic disciplines has made the Faculty one of its kind in the country. Based on the scientific premise that human beings are part of nature, students research and analyze human behavior and culture, as well as social structures and systems which arise from them.

Diverse forms of entrance exams, such as the “AO entrance exam,” that bring out the best of the individuality of motivated students.

In addition to the regular entrance examinations (early and late dates) and admission based on recommendation, the Faculty introduced the “AO entrance examination” system in 2007, an option available for all courses. Regular entrance examinations are administered at Iwate University (Morioka, Iwate), as well as at the examination centers in Tokyo (early dates) and Sapporo (early and late dates).

The “major/minor” double specialization system, with which students are free to explore beyond a single specialized area..

The aim of the “major/minor” double specialization system is for students to actively pursue “integration,” which is one of the defining qualities of the Faculty. Students can belong to a major course and simultaneously take a course-specific subject package as a minor; this allows them to deepen their overall expertise from different perspectives.

“Integrated sciences,” which fosters skills to relate various academic fields.

The courses offered in this program, taken by all students in their 3rd year or above, embody the principle of the Faculty, fostering skills for the comprehensive coordination of specialized knowledge in diverse fields. “Integrated Sciences I” covers issues related to the rapid transformation of modern society, such as the environment, peace, and gender; “Integrated Sciences II” covers issues related to concepts and methodology that cross over the boundaries between diverse academic fields.

Students enroll in one of the four programs offered; from the 2nd or 3rd year, they will focus on a specific course of their choice in the program.
